research

From growing steelhead trout to optimizing bay scallop farming techniques, Ward Aquafarms is continuously conducting research and sharing the results to expand and improve sustainable aquaculture.

About the Farm

Ward Aquafarms began as a small scale oyster farm in Megansett Harbor, Massachusetts in 2012. Not even ten years later, Ward Aquafarms & Hatchery is a cutting edge, vertically integrated aquaculture company growing shellfish from their larval state to market size. Ward Aquafarms focuses on constantly advancing the technology and methods of aquaculture, making the practice more efficient and safer for workers and the environment.

Ward Aquafarms commercially grows and sells market size oysters, bay scallops and sugar kelp as well as oyster and bay scallop seed. Ward aquafarms is also investigating ways to improve the commercial success of adult bay scallops, sugar kelp, steelhead trout and tautog. Much of the work conducted by Ward Aquafarms is to scientifically experiment with new technology, techniques and methods that can be shared with aquaculturists, government and town organizations, NGOs and members of the scientific community. Much of the scientific work conducted by Ward Aquafarms is done in collaboration with other scientific groups as well as other farmers, commercial fishermen, Universities, towns, and government agencies such as NOAA and the USDA.

In addition to the commercial sales of oysters and scientific investigations, Ward Aquafarms also participates in the shellfish propagation programs for towns, such as Bourne, Orleans, and Falmouth.

Currently, Ward Aquafarms has farming locations in East Falmouth, North Falmouth, Orleans, Bourne and Wareham, Massachusetts..  Learn more about the farm.
